Climate Camp in Clare aims to ‘build collective strength’ in a time of crisis

Family-friendly gathering from 7th-9th August aims to connect struggles across the Shannon Basin

Hundreds of activists from grassroots groups across Ireland and beyond will gather in Co Clare next week for an event that aims to build resistance to “the system of greed and destruction that currently dominates us”.

This year’s Climate Camp, which will take place on a farm near Ennis from 7th to 9th August, will focus on the Shannon Basin — connecting the struggles against US military use of Shannon Airport, LNG import terminals, data centre expansion, mining and water extraction from the River Shannon.

Climate Camp is a free, family-friendly, anti-capitalist gathering that features workshops, debates, practical skill-sharing, music, dancing and more.

A statement from Slí Eile, the main organising group behind the Camp, calls for communities and people to “recognise our common strength and take back control of our lives — in Ireland there is now a tangible swell of grassroots organisations putting an alternative way of living and relating into practice.”

“Community and connection are the most important tools we have in defending ourselves against billionaires and imperialist states.”

“As heatwaves and forest fires sweep across Europe, Climate Camp is an opportunity to become proactive, to see the connections between militarisation, climate change and environmental justice, and the ways we can respond to them.”

The packed programme starts on Friday 7th August with panels discussing the history of political resistance in Ireland followed by practical skill-share workshops.

On Saturday attendees will hear from those taking action against air bases and resisting imperialism in Ireland, Britain and Cyprus. There will also be a session connecting militarism to mining and extractivism, followed by a discussion of the threat of LNG terminals.

There’ll be plenty of yoga and other movement breaks and in the evenings there will be music, dancing, campfires and craic.

Marian O’Farrell, who took part in the last Climate Camp on the shores of Lough Neagh in Co Tyrone, said: “I had never been to anything like this. It was a real eye-opener and totally inspiring to be part of a collectively-run event with hundreds of people cooking, building camp, making decisions together, debating, dancing and learning from each other.”

This year‘s Camp will be the fourth since 2022. The gathering at Ardboe in Co Tyrone in 2024 was at the invitation of the Save Lough Neagh campaign and also the community in the Sperrins resisting a proposed toxic gold mine.

A camp in north Leitrim in 2023 was co-hosted by community campaigns resisting gold mining, industrial conifer plantations and who achieved a ban on fracking in the Republic. The 2022 Camp in north Kerry supported local campaigners who have, to date, successfully held off the proposed Shannon LNG gas import terminal.

Climate Camp is free and open to anyone who wishes to camp – or for local people to drop in – but registration is essential. The location of the Camp will be shared with those who register HERE
