IWW: Artists Rights are Worker's Rights!

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in Derry extends its support and solidarity to artists in the city ahead of planned protests organised by workers in the arts and creative sector. 

An IWW spokesperson in Derry said, "On behalf of the Industrial Workers of the World, we would like to extend our solidarity with artists locally and call upon the people of Derry to support artists who are simply demanding better for workers within the arts industry.

"Without  doubt,  artists and creatives across the city have been short-changed. Whether that's in terms of pay and conditions, safe guarding, or health and safety overall. 

"The city will this year mark the 40th anniversary of Halloween festivities in Derry. This is one of the main events within the city's tourism calendar, with a global reach that attracts thousands and generates equal amounts for the local economy.  We have to recognise that if it wasn't for artists and creatives in locally, this and other celebrations and festivals simply couldn't happen. Artists are workers, and workers have rights. This needs to be acknowledged, and many issues artists have raised need to be addressed without delay.

"As a union, it is the view of the IWW that the only effective remedy to challenging the issues facing artists locally is for artists to collectively stand together and unionise. Stand with the Artists of Derry."
