Members of the Industrial Workers of the World in Derry took part in this years Foyle Pride celebrations. The fact that Foyle Pride week of events is an independent Pride event, is in itself a cause for celebration.
A spokesperson for the IWW in Derry commented during today's Pride Parade stating that “As a union, we feel that it's so important that union's are on the streets with thousands of other workers, and their families celebrating Foyle Pride.
"We would like to congratulate the organisers for the work involved in putting this event together each year. Foyle Pride remains independent and free from the clutches of private corporations, the politicians and the cops. This is also an important factor in celebrating pride and ensuring that it continues as a protest.
"You have to remember that Foyle Pride has a special place in radical queer history and politics throughout Ireland. As a union, we're here with many other union activists to celebrate that Pride is a vehicle of protest on the streets.
"Besides raising awareness of the ongoing struggles of our LGBTQI+ brothers and sisters, it has been important to also raise the flag of Palestine, an international symbol of resistance against Zionism. It's vital for each of us to unsure that their struggle is not forgotten on a day such as this. Pride is a cause for celebration but also of protest and resistance."
