IWW Demand the Rights of Trans Workers be Defended

On the 13th July, thousands gathered with Trans & Intersex pride in their annual march. This year’s march was under the slogan “death, death to the NGS” - a demand to desegregate the health service and make trans healthcare a consent based service.
This came about after it was reported that the national gender service was closing its waitlist to new referrals - a list which already had over 2,000 people and had wait times of years - Ireland has been reported as ranking as one of the worst counties for trans healthcare in the EU. Other issues raised included the housing crisis, extortionate rents, worker’s rights, and the genocide carried out by Israel.
The show of solidarity on the march was strong and reassuring, but there needs to be a serious movement that protects the rights of trans workers, who still face discrimination in wages, workplace and health and housing access.
Attempts to deny the trans rights movement’s place in the wider worker’s struggle should not be tolerated when trans workers have been among the strongest allies of worker’s rights in Ireland - trans and intersex pride demonstrated that exact solidarity, and it is our strength. the queer and trans struggle is an international workers struggle after all.
