Solidarity with Health Workers Fighting Further Cuts

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) extends its solidarity with health care workers and shared its concerns following proposed cuts within the health and social care trusts across the six counties. It is believed that trusts are expected to make cuts of up to 12% throughout the health service.

As Health Workers gathered at locations across the North to protest at the announcement, a spokesperson for the IWW Ireland Branch said, "This should be viewed as yet another attack on our health Service and upon working class communities, no matter how they try and dress it up. At a time when our health services are being decimated, it is important that all public sector workers mobilise against it. We believe it is crucial that we stand alongside all workers fighting against further cuts to jobs and services, whether that's within the health sector or the transport sector."

Speaking to fellow workers in Belfast during today's protest actions against proposed cuts, one member commented that, "Most people believe that both Stormont and Westminster are deliberately allowing this to happen. Running down services, in order to pave the way for the private sector to step in and feed off whatever is left. It's not on".

An IWW spokesperson in Derry said, "Workers are here in protest as they believe that this cannot be allowed to happen. The trade union movement, as we speak, is preparing that fight back, and we fully extend our solidarity.

"It is unacceptable that our health workers will be subjected to further cuts and a promised living wage deliberately withheld from them. This will not only have an impact on the health sector jobs but within every working class home across the north. Greater worker's solidarity is required to defeat any attempt by bosses to destroy our health services."
