As the New Year begins, so too has the protests in solidarity with the IWW Ireland member, suspended from the Newcastle Tesco store for refusing to handle Israeli goods.

Since news of this action went public, back in early November 2025, there has been a growing number of solidarity messages, as well as solidarity actions across Ireland and England in support of the Tesco workers courageous action.

A spokesperson for the Industrial Workers of the World in Ireland said that, “The response from ordinary workers, the trade union movement and the Palestine Solidarity community has been commendable.

“Each week, since the beginning of November, actions have taken place outside of Tesco Stores throughout the country. This has given the worker involved much needed support at a very difficult time, having been suspended from work and facing the added pressure of disciplinary action by Tesco management.

“It’s important for them to see such actions continuing but also growing in numbers on both islands. They know that their actions has inspired other workers to consider similar actions and continue the global campaign against Israeli products.”

This action is similar to that of the eleven Dunnes Stores workers back in 1984, when workers refused to handle goods from apartheid South Africa. As a result of this action, workers spent three years on the picket line outside of the Dunnes Stores building at Henry Street, Dublin.

Through their actions the Dunnes Stores workers led the way in assisting the international call to the end apartheid regime.

Throughout history, workers have repeatedly stepped forward to raise their voices and to use the power of their labour against injustice and exploitation. The Tesco Worker Campaign needs all our the support to help increase the pressure at this time, and to defend every workers right to refuse Israeli products!
