Solidarity with Journalist Targeted in Derry

Industrial Workers of the World in Derry extends its solidarity with a local journalist following targeted threats and intimidation.
A spokesperson for the IWW Derry Branch said, "The IWW would like to extend our support and solidarity with a local journalist who faced targeted abuse and threats whilst covering a street protest outside of the Waterside Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) station.
"We condemn the actions of those behind the threatening behaviour towards a local journalist whilst covering a community interest story. The photographer, a local member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), was singled out and threatened by several members of protest, who advised them to not to document the protest action 'if they wanted to get out of the area safe and sound'.
"The IWW condemns all acts of threats and intimidation towards any journalist going about the course of their day-to-day work. Sadly, over the last decade or more, we have increasingly witnessed a deliberate escalation of attacks and intimidation on journalists, at both national and international levels.
"We would like to extend our solidarity with the journalist directly involved and to all NUJ members at this time. Journalists face all sorts of deplorable behaviour on a daily basis, from physical threats to actual assaults, and even loss of life. Any attack on journalists is an attack on all of us as workers. It is totally unacceptable and requires a wider response from the labour movement."
