The Industrial Workers of the World, Ireland branch has echoed the call for 'widespread solidarity action' in support of Tesco Worker this coming weekend.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the IWW Ireland Branch has called upon workers and social justice groups to take part in widespread action now being planned for this weekend, Sunday 14th December.

"It is vital that we continue the ongoing action in support of our fellow worker, while the issue still remains unresolved. The Tesco worker involved still remains suspended ahead of disciplinary action for simply refusing to handle Israeli products at the Newcastle Tesco store. We believe that all workers, be that in Tesco or any other place of employment, must be accommodated in exercising their own conscience when it comes to handling goods that are funding genocide. We find it totally unacceptable that any worker could be singled out or targeted by bosses for rightfully refusing to assist the funding of the Israeli regime and it's ongoing genocide.

"It is vital that the trade union movement come out and actively support every worker targeted in such a way as the Tesco worker in Newcastle has been. An injury such as this, to one worker must be viewed as an injury to every worker. The IWW union echo's the call by the Tesco Worker Campaign by call for widespread solidarity action to grow, until such a time that its issue is successfully resolve."

In a statement issued by the campaign, it said "We call on solidarity groups and unions on the island of Ireland and across Wales, Scotland and England to Descend on Tesco this Sunday 14th December in support of the worker who has been suspended for refusing to handle goods from so-called Israel.

"On Sunday 14th December, we remember the actions of the Dunnes workers who refused apartheid South Africa produce in 1984 and were suspended for their actions.

"Take action, tell Tesco to withdraw any disciplinary action and allow all their workers to exercise their conscience when it comes to handling goods funding genocide."
